We administered the grant to form a community band using the new Whittonstall Church community space. The project was to create an all age concert band and to encourage both the young and old to start playing, continue playing or play an instrument for the first time! Well it’s certainly achieved it’s goal as they are now in their second year, with a number of public performances last year. Get involved – see Facebook for details or visit the band’s web site.
Litter Pick Equipment
Volunteers used home-made traffic signage, borrow reflective safety wear and pickers. Thanks to a grant we have professionally manufactured safety signs, appropriate high visibility safety clothing and litter picking equipment that makes the job a lot easier and safer. This year we collected 50+ bags of litter in one morning, next year please come along and give us a hand. We will be making litter pickers available on loan, so if you feel the urge to have a go yourself, send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org and we will get one to you.
Maintenance of Parish Council and community assets
We were awarded a grant to maintain the benches within the parish. This including Inspections, clearing undergrowth, strimming and cutting back any overhanging branches in the vicinity and applying weed killer where appropriate. The treatment and repair of the benches was carried out and a new timber bench on the verge adjoining the Manor House Inn was installed. This project has now been completed
W.W.I. Medals for Parish children
To mark the 100th anniversary of the First World War we were awarded a grant to give every child who lives and goes to school in our community a commemorative medal to help remember the sacrifice of so many lives. These were distributed across the Parish through the school, community groups and individual contacts. This project has now been completed.
The Parish Community Website www.shotleylowquarter.org is now in up and running ( – of course as you are viewing it now !!!) and development and the Shotley Low Quarter Facebook page went live recently and has already received a good number of ‘likes’. Both of these will be used to share information with residents and we would like your input and feedback on both!
